Huge game by Carey boosts Moorhead over Eastview, 5-2

Thomas Carey had one goal and two assists to lead the Moorhead Spuds to a 5-2 victory over the Eastview Lightning.

Carey got on the board by slotting home a goal 10:27 into the first period to make the score 3-0 Moorhead. Carey dished an assist on Tony Uglem's goal that made the score 2-0 Moorhead at 8:21 into the first period. He added another helper on Will Borgen's goal that made the score 4-0 Moorhead at 13:29 into the second period.

The win gave Moorhead a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.

Eastview's power play was ineffective against the Spuds' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Moorhead made Lightning's goaltenders to work all game long, racking up 38 shots and forcing 33 saves. Zachary Driscoll made 22 stops and Matthew Montgomery made 11.

Moorhead also got points from Borgen, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Grant Weiss also scored for Moorhead. More assists for Moorhead came via Alex Mehnert, who had two and John OConnor and Tucker Masseth, who contributed one a piece.

The Lightning put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Spuds to score on any of their nine power plays. Eastview kept Moorhead's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jacob Dittmer made 17 saves on 31 shots.

The Lightning were led by Ryan McNamara, who registered one goal and one assist. McNamara scored short handed 3:04 into the third period to make the score 4-1 Moorhead. Eastview was on a disadvantage when Ethan Murray went off the ice for roughing. Nick Abbott picked up the assist. Eastview also got a goal from Jake McGlocklin as well. In addition, Eastview received assists from Pierce Erickson, who had one.

The Spuds ended with 39 minutes in penalty time with 12 minors and one major. The Lightning ended with 27 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors and one major.
