Moorhead beats Lakeville North 5-3 after comeback scare

The Moorhead Spuds survived a determined comeback attempt by the Lakeville North Panthers on the way to a 5-3 win.

Moorhead took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have Lakeville North storm back on a Jack Poehling goal 9:46 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The win gave the Spuds a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.

Grant Weiss was all over the ice for Moorhead, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Weiss scored the first of his two goals at one second1 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-2. Aaron Herdt assisted on the tally. Weiss' next tally made the score 4-2 Moorhead with 8:01 left in the second period. Herdt picked up the assist.

Moorhead also got points from Herdt, who also finished with two goals and three assists to lead the team in points. Moorhead also got a goal from Nicholas Uglem as well. Other players who recorded assists for Moorhead were Will Borgen, who had one and Thomas Carey, who had two.

The Panthers were helped by Angelo Altavilla, who had one goal. Altavilla scored on the power play 10 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Lakeville North. Jack McNeely assisted on the tally. Lakeville North additionally got points from Poehling, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Nick Poehling also scored for Lakeville North. More assists for Lakeville North came via Jack Sadek, who had two and Erik Rutt and Tristan Hazlett, who contributed one a piece.

Jacob Dittmer made 20 saves for the Spuds on 23 shots. Moorhead ended with no penalties and went 1-for-0 on the power play. Lakeville North's Pierce Wilson stopped 21 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Panthers avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored two goals off of zero power plays.
