Buffalo's Schmelzer deadly on offense in 6-3 win against BurlingtonWave Twin Rinks - Black Tue, Feb 26, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Buffalo Jr. Sabres relied on the scoring touch of Ryan Schmelzer, who netted two goals, to beat the Burlington Cougars, 6-3. Schmelzer scored on the power play at 10:05 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Buffalo and again while 4:46 into the third to make the score 4-2 Buffalo.The win gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. Burlington's power play was ineffective against the Jr. Sabres' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. Buffalo put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cougars to score on any of their seven power plays. Burlington was unable to stop the Jr. Sabres from sending pucks towards the net, and Buffalo eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. Buffalo additionally got points from Nathan Sucese, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Dylan Howatt also scored for Buffalo. In addition, Buffalo received assists from Nathan Pelligra and Sean Federow, who contributed one a piece and Tyler Gjurich, Max Mikowski, and Frank Hora(APM), who each chipped in two. The Cougars' offense rang up 37 shots on the Jr. Sabres' net. Burlington was helped by Jeremy Gottzmann, who had two goals. Gottzmann scored the first of his two goals at 11:17 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Burlington. Steven Mueller assisted on the tally. Gottzmann's next tally made the score 3-2 Buffalo with 54 seconds left in the second period. Adam Glynn picked up the assist. Burlington also got points from Mike Sones, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were Tyler Mayea, who had one. Parker Gahagen recorded 34 saves for Buffalo. The Jr. Sabres totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Buffalo ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and David Seward was ejected from the game. The Cougars' Alex Murray stopped 33 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Burlington incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
