Cobourg beats Trenton 5-4 after comeback scare

The Trenton Golden Hawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Cobourg Cougars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Cobourg took a 3-0 lead during the second period, only to have Trenton storm back on a Sammy Banga goal 9:12 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, the Golden Hawks face elimination next time out.

The Cougars got the win with help from a great game by Justin Danforth, who had one goal and two assists. Danforth scored short handed 7:51 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Cobourg. Cobourg played down a man on Theo Lewis's kneeing. Colbie Andrews picked up the assist.

The Cougars forced Trenton's goalies to work without much rest, totaling 37 shots and forcing 32 saves. Andrew Winsor made 27 stops and Victor Adamo made five.

Cobourg also got points from Andrews, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Cobourg included Taylor Gauld, who had one and Dylan Goddard, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Jake Emilio, Evan Jasper, Conner Hogg, and Connor Armour, who each chipped in one.

The Golden Hawks were led by Greg Trichilo, who racked up two goals. Trichilo scored the first of his two goals at 10:13 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Josh Timpano provided the assist. Trichilo's next tally made the score 5-4 Cobourg with 1:52 left in the third period. Dillon Warner assisted on the tally. Mike Nedoszytko also scored for Trenton. In addition, Trenton received assists from Nick Marinac, who had two and Shawn Hulshof, Alex Leader, and Nolan Martin, who contributed one a piece.

Cobourg's CJ Sharp stopped 22 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Cougars incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Trenton incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors. For the Golden Hawks, Loren Ulett and Winsor were ejected from the contest.
