Elmira beats Cambridge 4-2 after comeback scare

The Elmira Sugar Kings survived a determined comeback attempt by the Cambridge Winter Hawks on the way to a 4-2 win.

Elmira made the score 4-1 on a goal by Brady Campbell at 9:26 in the third period, and Cambridge got as close as 4-2 when Chris Taylor scored 16:29 into the third period.

The win gave the Sugar Kings a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Elmira was sparked by Craig Johnson, who had one goal. Johnson scored on the power play 8:22 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Elmira. A abuse of officials penalty on Brennon Pearce had put the Sugar Kings on the power play. Jake Weidner picked up the assist.

Elmira kept the Winter Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Lucas Machalski made 39 saves on 43 shots.

Elmira additionally got points from Zac Coulter, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Pat McKelvie(APJ) also scored for Elmira. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Adam Brubacher, Brandon Stewart, and Mitch Wright, who contributed one a piece.

The Sugar Kings were unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 46 shots on goal.

Cambridge also got a goal from Tyler Snyder as well. More assists for Cambridge came via Cody Gratton, Eric Hackborn, and Todd Bannermon, who each chipped in one.

Hayden Neuman made 44 saves for Elmira on 46 shots. The Sugar Kings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Cambridge incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
