Newmarket blows out Whitby, 4-1Iroquois - Rink#1 Tue, Mar 05, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Newmarket Hurricanes were firing on all cylinders against the Whitby Fury, and when the final buzzer sounded Hurricanes emerged with a 4-1 win. After the loss made the series score 3-2 in the best of seven series, Whitby faces elimination next time out. Newmarket was led by goalie Matthew Wintjes, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Wintjes will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.0. The Hurricanes were led by Justin Maiolino, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Maiolino scored 18:52 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket. Daniel Leavens assisted on the tally. Newmarket's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Whitby power plays. The Hurricanes forced the Fury goalie Tyler Feaver to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. Newmarket also got points from Leavens, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Chris Chiste also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Alex Bontje, Sean Walker, and Kyler Nixon, who each chipped in one. Newmarket was unable to stop Whitby from sending pucks towards the net, and the Fury eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Whitby was led by Sam Gray, who scored the team's only goal. Gray scored 6:05 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Newmarket. Spencer MacCormack picked up the assist. The Hurricanes incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Fury's Feaver stopped 41 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Whitby incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Team's Shaquille Hickey and Gray were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
