Whitby's comeback falls short, Newmarket wins 3-2

The Newmarket Hurricanes, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Newmarket and clinched a 3-2 victory.

The Hurricanes led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Newmarket's Daniel Leavens's scored short handed at 19:53 in the first period to put the Hurricanes up 3-0.

The win moved Newmarket to down 2-1 in the best of seven series.

Newmarket also got points from Taylor Chick, who also registered one goal and one assist. Brandon Francisco also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Calvin Higley, Ryan Johnson, and Jacob Piltzmaker, who each chipped in one.

The Whitby Fury's offense rang up 36 shots on the Hurricanes' net.

Whitby was helped by Matt Davis, who grabbed one goal. Davis scored on the power play 5:47 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Newmarket. The Fury had gained a power play chance when Sean Walker was whistled for tripping. Jack Lewis picked up the assist. Whitby also got a goal from Spencer MacCormack as well. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Chris Raguseo and Steven Deeg, who contributed one a piece.

Matthew Wintjes rejected 34 shots on goal for Newmarket. The Hurricanes totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Newmarket ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Chris Chiste was ejected from the game. Whitby's Tyler Feaver stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Fury totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 2-for-7 on the power play. For Whitby, Sam Gray was ejected from the game.
