Marshall survives Luverne comeback, wins 5-3

The Marshall Tigers survived a determined comeback attempt by the Luverne Cardinals on the way to a 5-3 win.

Marshall made the score 5-2 on a goal by Beau Mikel at 2:57 in the third period, and Luverne got as close as 5-3 when Skyler Wenninger scored 10:47 into the third period.

The win gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.

Quinn Horvath had a great game for Marshall, netting two goals. Horvath found the back of the net 5:35 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Marshall and again while 1:15 into the third to make the score 4-2 Marshall.

Marshall also got points from Mikel, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Tyler Untiedt, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Marshall also got a goal from Corey Clark as well. More assists for Marshall came via Casper Larsen, who had one.

The Cardinals' offense rang up 42 shots on the Tigers' net. Luverne did not rack up many penalties in the contest, racking up just one minor for two minutes in penalty time.

Jordan Dingmann also scored for Luverne. Other players who recorded assists for Luverne were Chaz Smedsrud, who had two and Cole Desplinter, Austin Maxwell, and Gunnar Olson, who each chipped in one.

Masion Campion made 39 saves for Marshall on 42 shots. The Tigers incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Kendall Meyer recorded 21 saves for the Cardinals. Luverne registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
