Marshall School Duluth hangs on, beats Duluth Denfeld 3-2

Matthew Klassen scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Marshall School Duluth Hilltoppers held off the challenges of the Duluth Denfeld Hunters in a tough 3-2 win.

Marshall School Duluth took over the lead for good with a goal by Klassen at 11:07 in the first period. Jeremy Lopez picked up the assist.

 

Marshall School Duluth was paced by Cam McClure, who registered one goal. McClure scored 2:14 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Marshall School Duluth. Jack Dodd provided the assist.

The Hilltoppers forced Duluth Denfeld goalie Zach Thompson to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

Kris McKinzie also scored for Marshall School Duluth. More assists for Marshall School Duluth came via Kyle Jones, Kyle McKinzie, Michael Damberg, and Luke Pavelich, who contributed one a piece.

The Hunters put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Marshall School Duluth to score on any of its three power plays.

Duluth Denfeld was helped by Reid Lemker, who tallied one goal. Lemker scored on the power play 6:58 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Marshall School Duluth. The Hunters earned a power play opportunity when Lopez was put in the box for slashing. Levi Talarico assisted on the tally. Duluth Denfeld additionally got points from Talarico, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Duluth Denfeld received assists from Patrick Potswald, who had one and Alex Thomspon, who had two.

Caden Flaherty rejected 28 shots on goal for the Hilltoppers. Marshall School Duluth incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Thompson recorded 28 saves for Duluth Denfeld. The Hunters incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.

Marshall School Duluth Hilltoppers now will move on to the 2013 Class A MSHSL State Tourney representing Section 7A next week at the Xcel Energy Center.
