Stayner stifles Midland's comeback, gains 5-3 victory

The Midland Flyers almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the Stayner Siskins managed to pull out a 5-3 win in the end.

Stayner led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Siskins' Mike Mullay's scored on the power play at 16:02 in the second period to put Stayner up 3-0.

The win gave the Siskins a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Mac Flewelling had two goals to lead Stayner to victory. Flewelling's tallies came at 8:26 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Stayner and 19:32 into the third to make the score 5-3 Stayner.

The Siskins kept Midland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Connor Akins made 35 saves on 40 shots.

Stayner additionally got points from Mullay, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and James Mense-Dietrich, who also finished with two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Stayner received assists from Thomas Kesheshian, who had two and Nick Izgerean and Justin Reid, who each chipped in one.

The Flyers forced Stayner goalie Taylor Trace to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. Midland had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

The Flyers were helped by Cody Beasley, who registered one goal. Beasley scored on the power play 18 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-2 Stayner. Midland earned a power play opportunity when Jeff Hamm was put in the box for tripping. Jason Leigh picked up the assist. Midland also got a goal from Zach Leduc as well. More assists for Midland came via Jonathan Goldsworthy, C J Cook, and Curtis Warren, who contributed one a piece.

Trace rejected 32 shots on goal for the Siskins. Stayner incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. The Flyers incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
