Midland rides Akins to victory over Caledon, 6-1North Simcoe SRC Sat, Feb 09, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
A stellar performance between the pipes by Connor Akins helped the Midland Flyers defeat the Caledon Golden Hawks, 6-1. The win by Midland broke a deadlock and gave the Flyers a 2-1 advantage in the best of seven series. Midland pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 36 penalty minutes. The Flyers were led by Jon Meeks, who finished with one goal. Meeks scored 12:20 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Midland. Tyson Clark picked up the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:38 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with four game misconducts. Midland made Golden Hawks' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 42 shots and forcing 36 saves. Joseph Bonsignore made 33 stops and Paul Favaro made three. The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Caledon to score on any of its six power plays. Midland additionally got points from Clark, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Curtis Warren, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Jacob Busch also scored for Midland. Other players who recorded assists for Midland were Zach Leduc, who had three, Jordan Gravelle and Nathanial Jessop, who each chipped in one, and Jason Leigh and Cody Beasley, who contributed two a piece. Midland was unable to stop the Golden Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Caledon eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. The Golden Hawks were led by Zack Worth, who scored the team's only goal. Worth scored short handed 1:22 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Caledon. Caledon was on a disadvantage when Joseph Celebre went off the ice for kneeing. Chris Mete assisted on the tally. Akins rejected 32 shots on goal for the Flyers. Midland registered two goals on 11 power play opportunities. For the Flyers, Daniel Pickering was ejected from the game. The Golden Hawks ended with 50 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors and two majors. Team's Steven Klomp and Celebre were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
