Midland survives penalties, beats Caledon, 5-1

The Caledon Golden Hawks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Midland Flyers shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-1.

The win by Midland clinched the best of seven series at 4-1.

The Flyers were led by Cooper Jefferson, who registered one goal and one assist. Jefferson scored on the power play 15:02 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Midland. Midland earned a power play opportunity when Justin Lollino was put in the box for slashing. Jonathan Goldsworthy assisted on the tally.

The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Caledon to score on any of its seven power plays. Midland forced the Golden Hawks goalie Joseph Bonsignore to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

Midland additionally got points from Curtis Warren, who also finished with two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Jon Meeks, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Josh LaFrance also scored for Midland. More assists for Midland came via Jason Leigh, who had two and Matt Brown and Tyson Clark, who contributed one a piece.

The Flyers' Connor Akins stopped 23 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Midland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Joseph Bonsignore made 33 saves for Caledon on 38 shots. The Golden Hawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Caledon ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Steve Zeppieri was ejected from the game.
