GAME RECAP

Abbott's hat trick boosts Eastview over Rochester Mayo, 7-2

Rochester: Graham Arena 1    Sat, Dec 29, 2012

The Rochester Mayo Spartans could not stop the Eastview Lightning's Nick Abbott, who tallied a hat trick in a 7-2 win.

Abbott's first goal came 13:59 into the second period. He then added goals at 16:17 into the second and at 4:13 into the third.

Rochester Mayo trailed by one after the first period, but Eastview went into the second intermission with a 5-1 lead and never looked back.

The Spartans' power play was ineffective against the Lightning's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Eastview forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Lightning had been averaging 10.0 minutes in penalties per game. Eastview put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rochester Mayo to score on any of its eight power plays. The Spartans were unable to stop the Lightning from sending pucks towards the net, and Eastview eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The Lightning surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Eastview averages 3.3 goals per contest.

Eastview also got a goal from John Snodgrass as well. Other players who recorded assists for Eastview were Ryan McNamara, who had four and Mike Stillings, Ethan Murray, Brendan Kukowski, and Cole Cooper, who contributed one a piece.

Rochester Mayo's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Spartans are averaging 2.4 goals against for the season. Rochester Mayo could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Spartans were helped by Will Holton, who racked up one goal. Holton scored 13:44 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Eastview. Adam Alcott picked up the assist. Ryan Martin also scored for Rochester Mayo. In addition, Rochester Mayo received assists from Max Whitney, who had one.

Zachary Driscoll made 20 saves for the Lightning on 22 shots. Eastview registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Case Hansen rejected 32 shots on goal for Rochester Mayo.
