Gersich's big game bests Maple Grove in 5-2 Holy Family Catholic win

Shane Gersich was all over the ice for the Holy Family Catholic Fire, as he tallied two goals and one assist in Holy Family Catholic's 5-2 win over the Maple Grove Crimson.

Gersich found the back of the net 34 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-1 Holy Family Catholic and again while 10:59 into the third to make the score 4-1 Holy Family Catholic.

Maple Grove's power play was ineffective against the Fire's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Holy Family Catholic put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Crimson to score on any of their six power plays. The Fire's offense rang up 37 shots on Maple Grove's net. Holy Family Catholic could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

Holy Family Catholic additionally got points from Ryan Swanson, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Holy Family Catholic also got a goal from Garret Riebling as well. In addition, Holy Family Catholic received assists from Matt Anderson, who had one, Dylan Woolf, who had two, and Jonh Peterson, who had three.

The Crimson kept the Fire's goalie busy throughout the game, and Derek LaCombe made 32 saves on 34 shots. Maple Grove struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 18 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

The Crimson were helped by Joe Franta, who grabbed one goal. Franta scored 5:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Maple Grove. David Brumm provided the assist. Sam Valerius also scored for Maple Grove. More assists for Maple Grove came via Josh Passolt and Nate Erickson, who contributed one a piece.

John Danielson rejected 32 shots on goal for Maple Grove.
