Eveleth-Gilbert beats Greenway 5-4 after comeback scare

The Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears survived a determined comeback attempt by the Greenway Raiders on the way to a 5-4 win.

Eveleth-Gilbert made the score 5-2 on a goal by Zach Skelton at 1:41 in the third period, and Greenway got as close as 5-4 when Bazil Zuehlke scored 16:10 into the third period.

The Golden Bears forced the Raiders goalie Sam LaDoux to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

Eveleth-Gilbert was led by Nick Moe, who tallied two goals and one assist. Moe scored the first of his two goals at 10:56 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Eveleth-Gilbert. Mitchell Huffman picked up the assist. Moe's next tally made the score 4-2 Eveleth-Gilbert with 4:00 left in the second period. Huffman provided the assist. Eveleth-Gilbert additionally got points from Jeff Loftus, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Richard Craven also scored for Eveleth-Gilbert. More assists for Eveleth-Gilbert came via Cole Kopp and Brett Kivela, who each chipped in one.

Greenway put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Golden Bears to score on any of their four power plays. Eveleth-Gilbert was unable to stop the Raiders from sending pucks towards the net, and Greenway eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Greenway also got points from Alex Troumbly, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Greenway also got a goal from Joe OToole as well. In addition, Greenway received assists from Zach Childs, who had one.

Derek Hirsch rejected 30 shots on goal for the Golden Bears. Eveleth-Gilbert incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. LaDoux recorded 33 saves for the Raiders. Greenway totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play.
