Crookston uses fast start to beat Detroit Lakes, 9-0

The Detroit Lakes Lakers fell behind early, and the Crookston Pirates kept piling on the points on the way to a 9-0 victory.

Crookston got the win on the strength of a great game by Brady Heppner, who had four goals and three assists. Heppner notched his first tally 2:12 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:11 into the first, at 16:58 into the first, and at 4:09 into the third.

The Pirates' penalty kill excelled, as Crookston gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

The Pirates stifled Detroit Lakes' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Crookston's offense rang up 48 shots on the Lakers' net. The Pirates' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Crookston averages 4.0 goals per contest. The Pirates' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Crookston was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 14 penalty minutes.

Crookston also got points from Zack Sanders, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Ryan Edevold, who also finished with one goal and two assists, and Justin Cameron, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Crookston also got a goal from Alex Clauson as well. In addition, Crookston received assists from Ryan Bittner, who had two and Kyle Proulx, Dylan Klatt, Connor Morgan, and Kal Salentiny, who contributed one a piece.

Detroit Lakes did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Lakers average 2.3 goals per game.

Parker Epema made 16 saves for the Pirates on 16 shots. Crookston registered one goal on six power play opportunities. MacKenzie Steele rejected 39 shots on goal for Detroit Lakes. The Lakers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
