Sauk Rapids-Rice survives Northern Lakes comeback, wins 6-4Sports Arena East Sat, Jan 19, 2013 The Northern Lakes Lightning tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm held on for a 6-4 victory. A goal by Brandon Duray put Sauk Rapids-Rice up 6-3 in the third period, but Northern Lakes pulled to within two on Alex Galligan's tally 16:31 into the third period. Ryan Rutar had two goals and one assist to lead the Storm. Rutar scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Sauk Rapids-Rice. Sauk Rapids-Rice earned a power play opportunity when Gaven Bickford was put in the box for holding. Wyatt Orth assisted on the tally. Rutar's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 Sauk Rapids-Rice with 14:34 left in the third period. James Geisler picked up the assist. The Storm avoided man-down situations well, totaling one major for five minutes in penalty time. Sauk Rapids-Rice ended up below its season average of 10.0 penalty minutes per game. The Storm outdid their season average for goals scored. Sauk Rapids-Rice has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. Sauk Rapids-Rice also got points from Mathew Meyer, who also registered one goal and two assists, Duray, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Travis Kothenbeutel, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Geisler, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Sauk Rapids-Rice were Joel Haller and Luke Althaus, who contributed one a piece. The Lightning were led by Kegan Couture, who registered one goal and one assist. Couture scored 13:59 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Sauk Rapids-Rice. Bickford provided the assist. Northern Lakes also got a goal from Kyle Narveson as well. In addition, Northern Lakes received assists from Aspen Florey, Nick Blanchette, and Damian Jensen, who each chipped in one. The Storm's Justin Thorson stopped 24 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Sauk Rapids-Rice registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Mitch Stangel made 18 saves for Northern Lakes on 24 shots. The Lightning incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
