Campbell's hat trick boosts Mahtomedi over Richfield, 8-0

Kellen Campbell lifted the Mahtomedi Zephyers to an 8-0 victory with a hat trick against the Richfield Spartans.

Campbell got on the scoresheet 12:28 into the second period. He then added goals at 15:27 into the second and at zero seconds into the third.

The game was close after the first frame, but Mahtomedi banged in five goals during the second period to put the victory out of reach for Richfield.

The Zephyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Spartans to score on any of their four power plays. Mahtomedi was steadier on the defensive front than it has been for much of this season. The Zephyers gives up 2.9 goals on average per game. Mahtomedi forced Richfield goalie John Meyer to work between the pipes, taking 50 shots. The Zephyers' goal total was higher than their season average. Mahtomedi averages 3.8 goals per game.

Mahtomedi additionally got points from Jake Erickson, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Mac Rathmanner, who also registered one goal and one assist, Matt Bonine, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Jack Becker, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Mahtomedi also got a goal from Cory Bruggeman as well. More assists for Mahtomedi came via Truman Slack and Sam Koenig, who each chipped in one.

The Spartans' offense operated below they season average. Richfield puts an average of 2.8 pucks into the net per game. The Spartans' offense were handcuffed by the Zephyers' defensive play, and Richfield managed only 12 shots on goal during the game.

Colin Denis recorded 12 saves for Mahtomedi. The Zephyers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. John Meyer made 42 saves for the Spartans on 50 shots. Richfield incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
