St. Thomas Academy uses early goal to top Benilde St. Margarets, 3-1

The St. Thomas Academy Cadets beat the Benilde St. Margarets Red Knights, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

St. Thomas Academy took over the lead for good with a goal by Alex Johnson at 49 seconds in the first period. Peter Tufto picked up the assist.

The Cadets were led by goalie David Zevnik, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Zevnik will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.48.

St. Thomas Academy was paced by Tony Bretzman, who tallied one goal. Bretzman scored on the power play 4:02 into the first period to make the score 2-0 St. Thomas Academy. The Cadets earned a power play opportunity when T.J. Moore was put in the box for roughing. Tom Novak provided the assist.

St. Thomas Academy's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Benilde St. Margarets power plays. Benilde St. Margarets was unable to stop the Cadets from sending pucks towards the net, and St. Thomas Academy eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

St. Thomas Academy additionally got points from Novak, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Johnson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas Academy were Henry Hart, who had one.

The Red Knights' offense operated below they season average. Benilde St. Margarets puts an average of 5.4 pucks into the net per game. The 29 shots that the Red Knights put on net surpassed Benilde St. Margarets' average of 19.2 shots per game this season.

The Red Knights were led by Peter Heimbold, who scored the team's only goal. Heimbold scored 3:49 into the second period to make the score 2-1 St. Thomas Academy. Grant Besse picked up the assist.

The Cadets incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Andrew Sprang rejected 29 shots on goal for Benilde St. Margarets. The Red Knights incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
