St. Thomas Academy boosted by Zevnik's play in net, beats Holy Family Catholic 6-1

Victoria    Tue, Dec 04, 2012

The St. Thomas Academy Cadets relied on the sparkling performance of David Zevnik in net to grab a 6-1 win against the Holy Family Catholic Fire.

Holy Family Catholic fell victim to a deadly St. Thomas Academy power play, which ripped the Fire for four goals.

The Cadets were paced by Jack Dougherty, who finished with one goal. Dougherty scored on the power play 13:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 St. Thomas Academy. St. Thomas Academy had gotten the advantage when Holy Family Catholic's Will Garin was sent off for roughing. Christiano Versich assisted on the tally.

The Fire were unable to stop the Cadets from sending pucks towards the net, and St. Thomas Academy eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. The Cadets could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

St. Thomas Academy also got points from Dan Weihrauch, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Henry Hart, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Matt Perry, who also finished with one goal and one assist. St. Thomas Academy also got a goal from Tom Novak as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas Academy were Wyatt Schmidt, Jack Stang, and Austin Sattler, who each chipped in one.

The Holy Family Catholic penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the Fire had been spending in the box. Holy Family Catholic forced St. Thomas Academy goalie Zevnik to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Fire were led by Garret Riebling, who scored the team's only goal. Riebling scored on the power play 10:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Holy Family Catholic.

Zevnik recorded 33 saves for the Cadets. Holy Family Catholic's Derek LaCombe stopped 33 shots out of the 39 that he faced. The Fire registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
