Elk River completes comeback, beats Maple Grove, 5-4Maple Grove Premier Thu, Jan 31, 2013 The Maple Grove Crimson could not hold down the Elk River Elks, and Elks erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 5-4 win. Elk River let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Elks took a 3-2 advantage on a goal by Tim Sandford at 6:42 in the second period. Elk River found itself down 2-0 after Maple Grove's David Brumm put the puck home at 1:31 in the first period. After evening things up at 4-4 on a goal by Chris Freemark at 4:04 in the third, the Elks got the game-winner from Chase Springman at 5:55 in the third period. Springman had a great game for Elk River, netting two goals. The Elks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Crimson to score on any of their three power plays. By firing 38 shots on goal, Elk River exceeded the 4.7 shots it averages per game this year. Elk River also got points from Sandford, who also racked up two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Elk River also got a goal from Andrew Zerban as well. In addition, Elk River received assists from Jacob Jaremko, who had two and Wyatt Edge, Blake Hillman, and Peter Jones, who each chipped in one. With 27 shots on target during the contest, Maple Grove exceeded the 3.0 shots it averages per game this year. Maple Grove additionally got points from Sam Valerius, who also had one goal and one assist and Brumm, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Joe Franta also scored for Maple Grove. Other players who recorded assists for Maple Grove were Josh Passolt, who had two and Parker Dean and Nate Erickson, who contributed one a piece. MacLean Berglove made 23 saves for the Elks on 27 shots. Elk River incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Crimson's John Danielson stopped 33 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Maple Grove incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
