Maple Grove beats Champlin Park 4-2 after comeback scare

The Champlin Park Rebels tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Maple Grove Crimson held on for a 4-2 victory.

Maple Grove took a 4-1 lead during the second period, only to have Champlin Park storm back on a Ryan McNeil goal 2:49 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Nate Erickson had a great game for the Crimson, netting two goals. Erickson found the back of the net 11:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Maple Grove and again while on the power play 6:28 into the second to make the score 2-0 Maple Grove.

With 28 shots on target during the contest, Maple Grove exceeded the 4.1 shots it averages per game this year. The Crimson were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

Maple Grove also got a goal from Joe Franta as well. More assists for Maple Grove came via Sam Valerius, who had two and Charlie Thomsen, Parker Dean, and Jack Kuebelbeck, who each chipped in one.

The Rebels could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

Champlin Park additionally got points from Bryce Plunkett, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, Champlin Park received assists from Luke Dalman, who had two.

Maple Grove's John Danielson stopped 26 shots out of the 28 that he faced. The Crimson registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Tyler Nelson rejected 24 shots on goal for Champlin Park. The Rebels registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
