Mankato West shrugs off penalties, upends Winona, 7-3

The Mankato West Scarlets' penalty kill was superb, as Mankato West survived multiple penalties to beat the Winona Winhawks, 7-3.

In a losing effort, Winona was paced by Ty Mannor, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Mannor scored the first of his two goals at 1:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Grant provided the assist. Mannor's next tally made the score 3-1 Winona with 7:07 left in the first period. Grant assisted on the tally.

In the losing effort, the Winhawks were led by Mannor, who tallied two goals and one assist.

The Scarlets' offense rang up 45 shots on Winona's net. Mankato West was effective with a man advantage, and put in three goals while on the power play. The Scarlets' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Mankato West finished with 14 penalty minutes.

The Scarlets were led by Scott McKissick, who had one goal and one assist. McKissick scored on the power play 12:18 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Mankato West. Mankato West had taken the advantage when the Winhawks' Andrew Yeske got sent off for head contact. Mankato West also got points from Nick Campbell, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Tyler Loe, who also registered one goal and one assist. Mankato West also had goals scored by Ryan Jutting, who had two and Derek Frentz and Nate Krueger, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Mankato West were Tyler Jutting, who had two and Zach Erickson and Joey Langemeier, who each chipped in one.

Winona kept the Scarlets' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jake Spiess made 30 saves on 33 shots.

Nick Rowe also scored for Winona. More assists for Winona came via Michael Lubahn, who had one.

The Winhawks' Yeske stopped 38 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Winona totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play.
