St. Cloud Apollo survives Alexandria comeback, wins 3-1St. Cloud MAC Tue, Jan 29, 2013 The Alexandria Cardinals almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles managed to pull out a 3-1 win in the end. St. Cloud Apollo led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Eagles' Josh Kenney's scored at 10:44 in the first period to put St. Cloud Apollo up 3-0. The Eagles were paced by Paul Kenney, who grabbed one goal. Kenney scored 3:06 into the first period to make the score 2-0 St. Cloud Apollo. Jared Christen assisted on the tally. St. Cloud Apollo stifled Alexandria's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cardinals were unable to stop the Eagles from sending pucks towards the net, and St. Cloud Apollo eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. St. Cloud Apollo additionally got points from Christen, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Kenney, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for St. Cloud Apollo were Brandon Bloch, who had one and Jason Omann, who had two. Alexandria put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Eagles to score on any of their five power plays. The Cardinals were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes. Alexandria was led by Tom Schmidt, who scored the team's only goal. Schmidt scored 2:34 into the second period to make the score 3-1 St. Cloud Apollo. Jack Wensman picked up the assist. Nick Althaus recorded 19 saves for St. Cloud Apollo. The Eagles incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Cardinals' Ben Allen stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Alexandria registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. The Cardinals ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Schmidt was ejected from the game.
