Brainerd hangs on, beats Sauk Rapids-Rice 5-3

The Brainerd Warriors took the lead against the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory.

Brainerd took over the lead for good with a goal by Jacob Ellingson at 5:39 in the first period. Billy Desrocher provided the assist.

With three goals and one assist between them, Ellingson and Isaac Johnson teamed up to power the Warriors' offense. Ellingson registered two goals and one assist and Johnson also added one goal.

Brainerd's offense rang up 36 shots on Sauk Rapids-Rice's net.

Brainerd additionally got points from Logan Rivard, who also had one goal and one assist. Cole Smith also scored for Brainerd. In addition, Brainerd received assists from Christopher Pohlkamp and Alexander Mimmack, who contributed one a piece.

The Storm were led by Travis Kothenbeutel, who grabbed two goals. Kothenbeutel scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 12:55 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Brainerd. Sauk Rapids-Rice had taken the advantage when the Warriors' Pohlkamp got sent off for tripping. Kothenbeutel's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Brainerd with 3:07 left in the second period. The Storm earned a power play opportunity when Johnson was put in the box for holding. Mathew Meyer assisted on the tally. Sauk Rapids-Rice also got a goal from Tyler Long as well. Other players who recorded assists for Sauk Rapids-Rice were Joey Streeter, who had one.

Brainerd's Jared Rubado stopped 16 shots out of the 19 that he faced. The Warriors incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. William Mortenson made 31 saves for Sauk Rapids-Rice on 36 shots. The Storm incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
