GAME RECAP

Brainerd squeaks by Sartell-St.Stephen, 4-2

Bernicks Pepsi Arena    Tue, Jan 08, 2013

The Brainerd Warriors gutted out a close 4-2 win against the Sartell-St.Stephen Sabres.

Brainerd gained the winning advantage on a goal by Logan Rivard 4:28 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Rivard was all over the ice for the Warriors, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win.

Brainerd put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Sartell-St.Stephen to score on any of its three power plays. The Sabres' defense shut down the Warriors' forwards for much of the game, and Brainerd got off only 13 shots during the contest.

Brainerd also got points from Jacob Ellingson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Griffin Campbell also scored for Brainerd. Other players who recorded assists for Brainerd were Christopher Pohlkamp, who had two and Alexander Mimmack, Reno Fussy, and Jared Rubado, who contributed one a piece.

Sartell-St.Stephen managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Sabres wound up below its season average of 10.0 penalty minutes per game. Sartell-St.Stephen found itself stymied offensively, and got off a mere 11 shots against the Warriors' defense.

The Sabres were helped by Aaron Randall, who had one goal. Randall scored 10:27 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Sartell-St.Stephen. Spencer Zwiener provided the assist. Sartell-St.Stephen also got a goal from Ryan Tveit as well.

Rubado recorded nine saves for Brainerd. The Warriors totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Elliott Brookins made nine saves for Sartell-St.Stephen on 13 shots.
