Owatonna High School    Tue, Feb 12, 2013

The Mankato West Scarlets tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Owatonna Huskies held on for a 2-1 victory.

Owatonna took a 2-0 lead during the second period, only to have Mankato West storm back on a Nicholas Campbell goal 55 seconds into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Huskies' penalty kill excelled, as Owatonna gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

The Huskies were led by Jordan Klein, who had one goal and one assist. Klein scored 9:01 into the second period to make the score Owatonna. Aaron Peterson picked up the assist.

Owatonna was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 12.0 minutes per game the Huskies had been spending in the box. Owatonna stifled the Scarlets' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Mankato West put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Huskies to score on any of their three power plays. The Scarlets were held below their usual level of production. Mankato West averages 5.1 goals per game.

More assists for Mankato West came via Scott McKissick and Nate Krueger, who each chipped in one.

Luke Ebeling made 24 saves for Owatonna on 25 shots. The Huskies ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mason Bloomquist was ejected from the game. Jake Spiess recorded 24 saves for the Scarlets. Mankato West incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
