Richfield beats Minnehaha Academy 5-4 after comeback scareMinnehaha Academy Ice Arena Sat, Dec 15, 2012 The Richfield Spartans survived a determined comeback attempt by the Minnehaha Academy Red Hawks on the way to a 5-4 win. A goal by Bailey Olson put Richfield up 4-2 in the third period, but Minnehaha Academy pulled to within one on Ryan Evenson's tally 7:26 into the third period. The Spartans got the win with help from a great game by Jack Stellon, who had two goals and one assist. Stellon scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:35 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Richfield. A tripping penalty on Zach Newton had put Richfield on the power play. Drew Saastad provided the assist. Stellon's next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Richfield with 5:32 left in the first period. The Spartans earned a power play opportunity when Ryan Leo was put in the box for tripping. Kevin Ahlstrand assisted on the tally. Richfield managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Spartans finished below its season average of 10.0 penalty minutes per game. Richfield got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game. McCoy Jessen also scored for Richfield. Other players who recorded assists for Richfield were Zach Kruegar, who had two and Trigve Duryea, Alex Mendele, and Zach Ulmer, who each chipped in one. The the Red Hawks penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 17 minutes in penalty time. Minnehaha Academy had been averaging 11.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Spartans were unable to stop the Red Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Minnehaha Academy eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Red Hawks were helped by Josh Galkowski, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Galkowski scored short handed 12:17 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Minnehaha Academy played down a man on Erik Madryga's head contact. Newton picked up the assist. Minnehaha Academy also got points from Nick Terlizzi, who also finished with one goal and one assist. More assists for Minnehaha Academy came via Sam Lundquist, who had one. Ulmer rejected 27 shots on goal for Richfield. The Spartans registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Alex Katz recorded 25 saves for the Red Hawks. Minnehaha Academy registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities.
