Rochester Mayo survives Mankato West comeback, wins 2-1

The Mankato West Scarlets tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Rochester Mayo Spartans held on for a 2-1 victory.

Rochester Mayo made the score 2-0 on a goal by Tommy Hanson at 15:27 in the second period, and Mankato West got as close as 2-1 when Galt Goettl scored 11:28 into the third period.

The Spartans were sparked by Hanson, who had one goal.

Rochester Mayo stifled the Scarlets' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Spartans kept Mankato West's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jake Spiess made 35 saves on 37 shots.

Rochester Mayo also got a goal from Adam Alcott as well. Other players who recorded assists for Rochester Mayo were Max Whitney, who had one and Tommy Fjelsted, who had two.

The Scarlets put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rochester Mayo to score on any of its eight power plays. Mankato West did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Scarlets average 6.0 goals per game. Mankato West could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

More assists for Mankato West came via Derek Frentz, who had one.

The Spartans' Case Hansen stopped 24 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Rochester Mayo ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. The Scarlets registered zero goals on four power play opportunities.
