Mankato West beats Faribault 6-5 after comeback scare

The Faribault Falcons tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Mankato West Scarlets held on for a 6-5 victory.

A goal by Cole Filler put Mankato West up 4-1 in the second period, but Faribault pulled to within one on Cody Colegrove's tally 2:57 into the third period.

In the losing effort, the Falcons were led by Colegrove, who registered two goals. Colegrove scored the first of his two goals at 1:57 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Mankato West. Issiah Brogden assisted on the tally. Colegrove's next tally made the score 4-3 Mankato West with 17:03 left in the third period.

The Scarlets forced Faribault goalie Cody Morsching to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Mankato West's defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. The Scarlets give up 2.2 goals per game.

Mankato West was helped by Max Mettler, who racked up one goal and one assist. Mettler scored 8:20 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Mankato West. Dylan Leivermann picked up the assist. Mankato West also got points from Leivermann, who also tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Mankato West also got a goal from Nick Campbell as well. More assists for Mankato West came via Tyler Jutting, Scott McKissick, Christian Klemme, and Austin Langworthy, who each chipped in one.

Faribault additionally got points from Brogden, who also had one goal and one assist and Logan Murphy, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Connor Wierschem also scored for Faribault. Other players who recorded assists for Faribault were Riley Marquardt, who had one.

Conor Wollenzien made 17 saves for the Scarlets on 22 shots. Mankato West avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored zero goals off of zero power plays. Morsching rejected 36 shots on goal for the Falcons. Faribault finished the contest with no penalties and went 1-for-0 with the man advantage.
