Sydney Lightning uses shootout to best Melbourne Red Wings, 3-2

Hayden Sheard scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Sydney Lightning picked up the extra point in a 3-2 win over Melbourne Red Wings.

The two teams needed four turns to complete the shootout. Sydney Lightning's other shootout goal was scored by Sheard.

Sydney Lightning overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Sydney Lightning was down 2-1 after a goal by Melbourne Red Wings' Brendan McDowell at 11:28 in the third period. Sydney Lightning tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Axel Winton at 12:56 in the third period.

Sydney Lightning was sparked by Winton, who racked up one goal.

Sydney Lightning managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Sydney Lightning ended up below its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The 29 shots that Sydney Lightning put on net surpassed Sydney Lightning's average of 3.3 shots per game this season.

Chris Shephard also scored for Sydney Lightning. More assists for Sydney Lightning came via Sheard, who had one.

Melbourne Red Wings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Sydney Lightning power plays. With 24 shots on target during the contest, Melbourne Red Wings exceeded the 3.0 shots it averages per game this year.
