Granite City rips Michigan, 6-2Schwan SR-3 Sun, Dec 02, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Granite City Lumberjacks had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-2 win over the Michigan Mountain Cats. Granite City got the win behind a great game by Dakoda Menslage, who had two goals and one assist. Menslage scored the first of his two goals at 10:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Granite City. Nick Turbitt provided the assist. Menslage's next tally made the score 4-0 Granite City with 10:07 left in the second period. A checking from behind call on Liam Koons put the Lumberjacks on the penalty kill. Drew Otto assisted on the tally. Granite City stifled Michigan's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Lumberjacks kept the Mountain Cats' goalie busy throughout the game, and Dominic Juncaj made 30 saves on 36 shots. Granite City's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals. Isaac Hoagland also scored for Granite City. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Blake Phenow, Matt Peterson, Mitchell Gwost, and Nathan Kohlenhoefer, who each chipped in one and Aidan Verbeke and Alex Koopmeiners, who contributed two a piece. Michigan put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Lumberjacks to score on any of their four power plays. Granite City's Scott Murray stopped 21 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Lumberjacks incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Mountain Cats incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
