Soo Firehawks uses shootout to best Dayton Aeros, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Soo Firehawks defeated Dayton Aeros in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams.

Soo Firehawks came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Soo Firehawks trailed 4-2 after a goal by Dayton Aeros' Dalton Gertsen at 4:41 in the third period. Soo Firehawks knotted things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Kyle Maleport at 19:33 in the third period.

Soo Firehawks stifled Dayton Aeros' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Soo Firehawks' offense rang up 48 shots on Dayton Aeros' net.

Soo Firehawks was led by Nicholas Murphy, who had two goals. Murphy scored the first of his two goals short handed at 14:04 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Soo Firehawks was on a disadvantage when Alexander Drulia went off the ice for interference. Murphy's next tally short handed made the score 4-3 Dayton Aeros with 1:27 left in the third period. Soo Firehawks had gained a power play chance when Gertsen was whistled for kneeing. Ryan Marshall provided the assist. In addition, Soo Firehawks received assists from Nate Fitzpatrick, who had one.

Dayton Aeros forced Soo Firehawks goalie Keegan McGraw to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Dayton Aeros' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to Soo Firehawks' power play unit. Dayton Aeros got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Dayton Aeros was led by Hazen Ripple, who registered two goals. Ripple scored the first of his two goals at 11:29 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Dayton Aeros. Wesley Brand picked up the assist. Ripple's next tally made the score 3-2 Dayton Aeros with 1:18 left in the second period. Dayton Aeros also got points from John Cahill, who also racked up one goal and one assist.

Soo Firehawks' McGraw stopped 27 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Soo Firehawks ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Brandon Price made 43 saves for Dayton Aeros on 47 shots. Dayton Aeros totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
