Denver rolls over Tulsa, 5-2

The Denver Cutthroats were firing on all cylinders against the Tulsa Oilers, and when the final buzzer sounded Cutthroats emerged with a 5-2 win.

Denver was led by Mikael Bedard, who had one goal. Bedard scored 19:22 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Denver. Brad Smyth picked up the assist.

The Cutthroats forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Denver had been spending in the box. By firing 29 shots on goal, the Cutthroats exceeded the 23.0 shots they average per game this year. Denver cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Denver additionally got points from Smyth, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Denver included Gabe Gauthier, who had one and A.J. Gale, who had two. More assists for Denver came via Joel Chouinard, Luke Fulghum, and Jean-Philipp Chabot, who each chipped in one and Troy Schwab and Aaron MacKenzie, who contributed two a piece.

Tulsa's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 15 shots between them. With 37 shots on target during the contest, the Oilers exceeded the 16.8 shots they average per game this year.

Tulsa was led by Sean Erickson, who finished with one goal and one assist. Erickson scored on the power play 5:54 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Tulsa. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Gauthier had put the Oilers on the power play. Drew Fisher provided the assist. Ryan Menei also scored for Tulsa. In addition, Tulsa received assists from Ryan Cramer and Michel Beausoleil, who each chipped in one.

Kent Patterson made 35 saves for the Cutthroats on 37 shots. Denver ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ben Wilson was ejected from the game. Tulsa's Shane Madolora stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Oilers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
