Rapid City uses shootout to best Denver, 3-2 (3-1 SO)

Rapid City and the Denver Cutthroats both failed to score in overtime, but Rapid City won the game 3-2 (3-1 SO) after Damian Surma's deciding goal in the shootout.

The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams. Denver's shootout goal was scored by Gabe Gauthier. Rapid City also got shootout goals from Jarrett Konkle and Surma.

Rapid City came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Rapid City trailed 2-1 after a power play goal by the Cutthroats' Troy Schwab at 11:53 in the second period. Rapid City knotted things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by John Snowden at 9:00 in the third period.

Denver's power play was ineffective against Rapid City's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Cutthroats were unable to stop Rapid City from sending pucks towards the net, and Rapid City eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Scott Wray also scored for Rapid City. Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Rusty Masters, Surma, and Jordan Behler, who each chipped in one.

Denver relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as A.J. Gale, Jamie MacQueen and Joel Chouinard took 13 of the team's 25 shots.

The Cutthroats were helped by Brad Smyth, who racked up one goal. Smyth scored 16:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Denver. Gale provided the assist. In addition, Denver received assists from Sean Zimmerman and Jean-Philipp Chabot, who contributed one a piece.

Danny Battochio rejected 23 shots on goal for Rapid City. Rapid City incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Kieran Millan recorded 37 saves for Denver. The Cutthroats incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
