Arizona beats Denver 6-4 after comeback scare

The Arizona Sundogs survived a determined comeback attempt by the Denver Cutthroats on the way to a 6-4 win.

Arizona made the score 6-3 on a goal by Johan Ryd at 16:22 in the third period, and Denver got as close as 6-4 when Jean-Philipp Chabot scored 19:42 into the third period.

The Sundogs got the win behind a great game by Kyle Chipchura, who had two goals and two assists. Chipchura scored the first of his two goals at 10:19 into the second period to make the score 3-0 Arizona. Chad Nehring provided the assist. Chipchura's next tally made the score 5-2 Arizona with 10:49 left in the third period.

Arizona excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Sundogs' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Arizona averages 3.3 goals per contest. By firing 38 shots on goal, the Sundogs exceeded the 31.9 shots they average per game this year.

Arizona also got points from Mikael Bedard, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Derek LeBlanc, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Arizona also got a goal from Kyle Schussler as well. In addition, Arizona received assists from David Schlemko, Zack Firlotte, and Don Maloney Jr, who contributed one a piece.

The Cutthroats put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Arizona to score on any of its five power plays. Denver relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as A.J. Gale, Jamie MacQueen and Chabot took 24 of the team's 45 shots.

Denver additionally got points from Gabe Gauthier, who also registered one goal and one assist and Gale, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Kyle Quincey also scored for Denver. Other players who recorded assists for Denver were Brett Lutes, who had one and Brad Smyth and Luke Fulghum, who contributed two a piece.

Adam Russo recorded 41 saves for the Sundogs. Arizona incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Kent Patterson made 32 saves for the Cutthroats on 38 shots. Denver incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
