Dresden uses shootout to best Mt. Brydges, 5-4 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Dresden Kings defeated the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout.

Dresden overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Kings was down 3-1 after a power play goal by Mt. Brydges' Sean Candler at 5:40 in the second period. Dresden tied things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Jeff Vanrabaeys at 1:27 in the third period.

The Bulldogs' power play was ineffective against the Kings' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Dresden was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and three majors for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Kings surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. Mt. Brydges was unable to stop Dresden from sending pucks towards the net, and the Kings eventually piled up 47 shots on goal. Dresden got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

The Kings were helped by Dylan Mertz, who registered one goal. Mertz scored on the power play 8:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Dresden. A delay of game penalty on Tony Lindner had put Dresden on the power play. Alex Schmidt assisted on the tally. Dresden additionally got points from Josh Clements, who also registered one goal and one assist. Dresden also got a goal from Josh Beatty as well. More assists for Dresden came via John Montgomery, Taylor Sisson, Jesse Allen, Derek Daly, and Macks Holmes, who contributed one a piece.

The Bulldogs' offense rang up 49 shots on the Kings' net. Mt. Brydges found itself short handed often, totaling 38 penalty minutes and allowing 10 power plays.

The Bulldogs were helped by Jeremy Denomme, who racked up two goals and one assist. Denomme scored the first of his two goals at 16:24 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Spencer Wilson picked up the assist. Denomme's next tally made the score 2-1 Mt. Brydges with 19:21 left in the second period. Tyler Lockwood provided the assist. Mt. Brydges also got points from Candler, who also had one goal and two assists.

Brent Paxton made 45 saves for Dresden on 49 shots. Team's Kyle Havens, Alex Ritchie, and Wade Esselman were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Eric Steinman recorded 42 saves for Mt. Brydges. For the Bulldogs, Hayden Trbizan and Grant Duffield were ejected from the contest.
