Wallaceburg falls to Wheatley after surprising comeback

The Wallaceburg Lakers could not hold down the Wheatley Sharks, and Sharks erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 6-5 win.

Wheatley let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a three hole to pick up the win. The Sharks took a 4-3 advantage on a goal by Zach Wilson at 9:26 in the second period. Wheatley went down 3-0 after Wallaceburg's Sam Jasmin put the puck home at 6:40 in the first period. After knotting things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Mike Reid at 17:48 in the second, the Sharks got the game-winner from Kyle Quick at 12:49 in the third period.

Brendon Anger had one goal and two assists to lead Wheatley. Anger scored on the power play 3:57 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wallaceburg. The Sharks had taken the advantage when the Lakers' Jeff Morey got sent off for roughing. Brian Johnson provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 1:38 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Wheatley's offense rang up 34 shots on Wallaceburg's net. The Sharks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Wheatley averages 3.1 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Wheatley additionally got points from Quick, who also registered one goal and one assist and Johnson, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Jon Woelk also scored for Wheatley. More assists for Wheatley came via Dan Matoski, who had two and Kurtis Ouellette, Craig Adamson, Dylan Impens, and Eric Rivard, who each chipped in one.

The the Lakers penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. Wallaceburg surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Lakers were led by Justin Whitson, who racked up two goals. Whitson scored the first of his two goals at 4:04 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Wallaceburg. Bobby Domin assisted on the tally. Whitson's next tally made the score 4-4 with 7:43 left in the second period. Wallaceburg had gained a power play chance when Adamson was whistled for holding. Jake Carter provided the assist. Wallaceburg also got points from Jasmin, who also had one goal and one assist. Wallaceburg also got a goal from Kyle Jacobson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Wallaceburg were Barry Braun, who had two and Lucais Meyskens, Mike Myers, and Clay Wilhelm, who contributed one a piece.

Robbie Vrabel made three saves before being replaced by Marc Tremblay, who took the win and made 14 saves. The Sharks totaled 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors and two majors and went 4-for-10 on the power play. Team's Ouellette, Kevin Sawatzky, and Nikko Sablone were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Devine Cove made 28 saves for the Lakers on 34 shots. Wallaceburg registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For the Lakers, Myers, Chris Taylor, and Joe Allison were ejected from the contest.
