Guelph uses shootout to best Listowel, 6-5 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Guelph Hurricanes defeated the Listowel Cyclones in a shootout 6-5 (2-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for four attempts between the teams. Guelph's other shootout goal was scored by Michael Courvoisier.

The Hurricanes got the win on the strength of a great game by Zach McFadden, who had two goals and one assist. McFadden scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:53 into the third period to make the score 4-4. Guelph had gotten the advantage when Listowel's Sam Harris was sent off for holding. Ian Chan assisted on the tally. McFadden's next tally on the power play made the score 5-5 with 6:57 left in the third period. The Hurricanes earned a power play opportunity when Dylan Sayles was put in the box for hooking. Jason DaSilva provided the assist.

Guelph's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Listowel power plays. The Hurricanes forced the Cyclones goalie Daniel Dekoning to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Guelph found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Hurricanes average 2.6 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Guelph additionally got points from Chan, who also had one goal and one assist. Craig Martini also scored for Guelph. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Courvoisier, who had two and Nico Giannantonio, Ethan Morrison (AP), Bradley Yowart, and Sebastian Stangherlin, who each chipped in one.

Guelph was unable to stop Listowel from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cyclones eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. Listowel's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to the Hurricanes' power play unit. The Cyclones were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 24 penalty minutes.

Listowel was led by Jacob Robitaille, who registered one goal and two assists. Robitaille scored 6:18 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Listowel. Tanner Mighton assisted on the tally. Listowel also got points from Caleb Cameron, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Mighton, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Listowel also got a goal from Aaron Armstrong as well. In addition, Listowel received assists from Brandon Preistap, who had two and Mac Nichol and Scott Pawson, who contributed one a piece.

DaSilva rejected 40 shots on goal for Guelph. The Hurricanes incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Guelph ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Daniel Brennen was ejected from the game. Daniel Dekoning made 36 saves for the Cyclones on 41 shots.
