St. Thomas holds on for 5-3 win against Sarnia

The Sarnia Legionnaires tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the St. Thomas Stars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3.

A goal by Martin Kudla put St. Thomas up 5-2 in the third period, but Sarnia pulled to within two on Derek D`Andrea's tally 17:35 into the third period.

The Stars were led by Matt Tsioros, who had one goal and one assist. Tsioros scored 6:07 into the third period to make the score 4-2 St. Thomas. Kudla provided the assist.

St. Thomas found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays.

St. Thomas additionally got points from Kudla, who also registered one goal and one assist and Reid Oliver, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Scott Mitchell as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Mike Iacocca, who had two, Drew Collinson, who had three, and Ryan Hamelin and Ian MacDonald, who contributed one a piece.

Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

The Legionnaires were helped by Thomas Moxley, who finished with one goal. Moxley scored 3:16 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Hunter Tyczynski assisted on the tally. Jeff King also scored for Sarnia. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Matt Cimetta, Josh Kestner, Steve Farlow, and Brent Sauve, who each chipped in one.

The Stars' Devin Golets stopped 18 shots out of the 21 that he faced. St. Thomas registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Sean Parker rejected 24 shots on goal for Sarnia. The Legionnaires ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For Sarnia, PJ Vandervaart was ejected from the game.
