Niagara Falls falls to Welland after surprising comeback

Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Welland Jr. Canadians battled back to claim a 3-2 victory over the Niagara Falls Canucks.

Welland never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Jr. Canadians fell behind 3-1 after a goal by Niagara Falls' Cole Vinnai at 11:37 in the second period. Welland tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Adam Mataya at 19:50 in the third period. The Jr. Canadians netted the game winner at 5:31 in the second period on a goal by Mataya.

Welland was paced by Mataya, who tallied one goal and one assist.

The Jr. Canadians forced the Canucks goalie Hunter Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Others who scored for Welland included Cole McKnight and Chris Brown, who scored one goal each. In addition, Welland received assists from Brooker Muir, who had two and Riley Brooks, Mac Seebach, and Chris Langdon, who each chipped in one.

Niagara Falls' offense operated below its season average. The Canucks average 4.4 goals per game.

Niagara Falls was helped by Mitch McIntosh, who registered one goal. McIntosh scored 2:25 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Drew Berkel assisted on the tally. Niagara Falls additionally got points from Vinnai, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Johnny Curran also scored for Niagara Falls. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Frank Nemeth and Darren Young, who contributed one each.

Chris McDougall recorded 24 saves for Welland. The Jr. Canadians incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with two minors. For Welland, Derek Van Ness was ejected from the game. The Canucks' Johnson stopped 31 shots out of the 34 that he faced. Niagara Falls incurred 36 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
