Early goals doom Elmira, falls to Waterloo, 13-1

A six-goal first period deficit cost the Elmira Sugar Kings, which could not recover and fell to the Waterloo Siskins, 13-1.

Evan Buehler was all over the ice for Waterloo, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Buehler scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:29 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Waterloo. The Siskins had taken the advantage when Elmira's Connor MacIvor got sent off for cross checking. Trevor Atkinson APJ provided the assist. Buehler's next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 Waterloo with 13:05 left in the first period. Matt Cruickshank picked up the assist.

Waterloo's Darren Huck was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 32 saves and let only one puck past him. Huck managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.07 prior to the game.

The Siskins made the Sugar Kings' goaltenders to work all game long, firing 66 shots and forcing 53 saves. Hayden Neuman made nine stops and Mackenzie Blackwood made 44. Waterloo's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Elmira power plays. The Siskins surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Waterloo averages 4.2 goals per contest.

Waterloo also got points from Keigan Goetz, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Stephen Comegna, who also had one goal and one assist, Brandon Jones, who also registered two goals and one assist, James Soper, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Jakub Jelen, who also registered one goal and one assist, Ryan Doucette, who also grabbed two goals and one assist, Jacob Bonin, who also had one goal and two assists, and Danny Hanlon, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Christian Mroczkowski also scored for Waterloo. More assists for Waterloo came via Matthew Mah, who had one.

Elmira forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 28.0 minutes per game the Sugar Kings had been spending in the box. Elmira was held below its usual level of production. The Sugar Kings put an average of 3.6 pucks into the net per game. Elmira's offense rang up 33 shots on the Siskins' net.

Elmira also got a goal from Jaden Goetz(APJ) as well. In addition, Elmira received assists from Rob Kohli and Cass Frey, who each chipped in one.

Waterloo incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Team's MacIvor, Goetz(APJ), and Blackwood were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
