Cambridge survives penalties, beats Brampton, 5-1

The Brampton Bombers failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Cambridge Winter Hawks shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-1.

Cambridge was sparked by Todd Bannermon, who finished with one goal. Bannermon scored 4:54 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cambridge. Mitch Klie assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:48 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Winter Hawks were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time.

Cambridge also got points from Klie, who also tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Cameron Pentsa, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Christian Barnard also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Andrew Coupland, who had two and Mitch Facey, Aaron Duggan, Lawrence Pagnan, Alex Bottigoni, and Chris Taylor, who contributed one a piece.

Brampton forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game the Bombers had been spending in the box. Brampton found itself stymied offensively, and got off a mere 14 shots against Cambridge's defense.

The Bombers were led by Brady Clouthier, who scored the team's only goal. Clouthier scored on the power play 8:19 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Cambridge. Brampton had gotten the advantage when the Winter Hawks' Maxime Lamontagne was sent off for tripping. Michael Darrigo provided the assist.

Jordan Lee rejected 13 shots on goal for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dylan Decker was ejected from the game. The Bombers took out Bryan Raymond after he had made 23 saves and installed Erik Angeli in goal, where he finished with one save and the loss. Brampton registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Bombers, Phil Caputo was ejected from the game.
