Waterloo squeaks by Elmira, 5-3

The Waterloo Siskins gutted out a close 5-3 win against the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jakub Jelen's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Jelen was all over the ice for Waterloo, as he registered two goals in the win.

The Siskins forced Elmira goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to work between the pipes, taking 61 shots.

Waterloo additionally got points from Evan Buehler, who also racked up one goal and one assist, James Soper, who also had one goal and one assist, and Christian Mroczkowski, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Trevor Atkinson APJ, who had two and Matthew Mah, Ryan Doucette, Jacob Bonin, and Stephen Witiuk, who each chipped in one.

The Sugar Kings made Siskins' goalies to work between the pipes, totaling 54 shots and forcing 51 saves. Darren Huck made 13 stops and PJ Bridges made 38.

Elmira was led by Brandon Stewart, who registered one goal and one assist. Stewart scored 1:19 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Jake Weidner assisted on the tally. Adam Brubacher also scored for Elmira. In addition, Elmira received assists from Cass Frey, Cash Seraphim, and Matt Harding, who contributed one a piece.

Waterloo incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Mackenzie Blackwood made 56 saves for the Sugar Kings on 61 shots. Elmira incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
