Port Colborne rips Stoney Creek, 8-2

The Port Colborne Pirates had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-2 win over the Stoney Creek Warriors.

Dima Lavrenov had two goals and two assists to lead Port Colborne. Lavrenov scored the first of his two goals at 1:57 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Thomas Sestini provided the assist. Lavrenov's next tally made the score 6-2 Port Colborne with 17:10 left in the third period. Zoren Popel picked up the assist.

The Pirates pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 22 penalty minutes.

Port Colborne put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Stoney Creek to score on any of its eight power plays. The Pirates kept the Warriors' goalie busy throughout the game, and Blake Richard made 25 saves on 33 shots. Port Colborne surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Pirates have scored at the pace of 4.9 goals per game during the current campaign.

Port Colborne also got points from Paul Moskalyk, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Pol Gonzalez, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Charlie Izaguirre, who also registered one goal and three assists. Zach DeConcilys also scored for Port Colborne. Other players who recorded assists for Port Colborne were Pat Murphy, who had one and Dayne Phillips, who had four.

Stoney Creek forced Port Colborne goalie Real Cormier to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

The Warriors were helped by Wesley St. Amand, who tallied one goal. St. Amand scored 1:17 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stoney Creek. Neil Aird provided the assist. Stoney Creek also got a goal from Blake Luscombe as well. In addition, Stoney Creek received assists from Zach Nieminen and Ryan Lewis, who each chipped in one.

Cormier recorded 29 saves for the Pirates. Port Colborne registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Stoney Creek incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
