GAME RECAP

Stratford hangs on, beats Kitchener 3-1

Allman Arena    Fri, Jan 25, 2013

The Stratford Cullitons beat the Kitchener Dutchmen, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Stratford took over the lead for good with a goal by Jonathan Langford at 10:16 in the first period. Mitch Vandergunst provided the assist.

The Cullitons' Nick Caldwell was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 26 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Caldwell will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.6.

Stratford was led by Josh Miller, who registered one goal. Miller scored short handed 7:20 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Stratford. The Cullitons found themselves down a man on Ryker Killins's roughing.

Stratford excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Kitchener was unable to stop the Cullitons from sending pucks towards the net, and Stratford eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Jared Culliton also scored for Stratford. More assists for Stratford came via Trevor MacDonald, who had one.

The Dutchmen's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Stratford power plays. Kitchener could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Dutchmen average 3.5 goals per game.

Kitchener was led by Jesse Young, who scored the team's only goal. Young scored 8:06 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Stratford. Chris Eckert picked up the assist.

The Cullitons incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Marc Williams recorded 37 saves for the Dutchmen. Kitchener incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
