Welland beats Thorold 4-2 after comeback scare

The Thorold Blackhawks tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Welland Jr. Canadians held on for a 4-2 victory.

A goal by Braden Curry put Welland up 4-1 in the second period, but Thorold pulled to within two on Tanner Pagendam's tally 3:40 into the third period.

In the losing effort, the Blackhawks were led by Pagendam, who grabbed two goals. Pagendam scored the first of his two goals at 9:23 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Welland. Kevin Millejours picked up the assist. Pagendam's next tally made the score 4-2 Welland with 16:20 left in the third period. Chris Goulet assisted on the tally.

The Jr. Canadians stifled Thorold's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Blackhawks were unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Welland could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Josh Gervais, who had one goal. Gervais scored 4:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. Matt Gillard picked up the assist. Welland also got a goal from Brooker Muir as well. More assists for Welland came via Chris Brown, who had one and Riley Brooks and Chris Langdon, who contributed two a piece.

Thorold forced Welland goalie Matt Coulombe to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

In addition, Thorold received assists from Kevin Lavoie, who had two.

The Jr. Canadians' Coulombe stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Welland registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Lapine Rob was ejected from the game. Vinny Merante made 31 saves for the Blackhawks on 35 shots. Thorold totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-5 on the power play. For the Blackhawks, Vince Dunn was ejected from the game.
