Port Colborne squeaks by Stoney Creek, 5-3

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Port Colborne Pirates escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Stoney Creek Warriors.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Dima Lavrenov's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Port Colborne got the win behind a great game by Charlie Izaguirre, who had two goals and one assist. Izaguirre scored the first of his two goals at 16:03 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Port Colborne. Pol Gonzalez assisted on the tally. Izaguirre's next tally made the score 3-3 with 9:00 left in the second period. The Pirates found themselves down a man on Nick Berst's hooking. Lavrenov picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the third period. Five fighting penalties were dished out along with five game misconducts.

Port Colborne racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The Pirates had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Port Colborne stifled Stoney Creek's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Pirates kept the Warriors' goalie busy throughout the game, and Blake Richard made 26 saves on 31 shots.

Port Colborne also got points from Lavrenov, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Port Colborne also got a goal from Trevor Smith as well. Other players who recorded assists for Port Colborne were DYLAN BURDICK, Pat Murphy, and Joe Dagostino, who each chipped in one.

Stoney Creek was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The Warriors surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Stoney Creek's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Port Colborne power plays. Port Colborne was unable to stop the Warriors from sending pucks towards the net, and Stoney Creek eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

The Warriors were led by Alexander Zaccaria, who finished with one goal and one assist. Zaccaria scored 1:20 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Stoney Creek. Jordan Thomas provided the assist. Cordell James also scored for Stoney Creek. In addition, Stoney Creek received assists from Neil Aird, Marco Mattina, Zach Niemanen, and Blake Luscombe, who contributed one a piece.

The Pirates' Real Cormier stopped 35 shots out of the 38 that he faced. Team's John DiLorenzo and Jordan Bolibruck were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Stoney Creek registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For the Warriors, Parsa Monsef, Harry Polyoka, and Niemanen were ejected from the contest.
