St. Thomas vanquishes Chatham in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Thomas Stars defeated the Chatham Maroons in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Chatham's shootout goal was scored by Eric Palazzolo. In addition to the clincher, St. Thomas got a shootout goal from Colin Mooney.

The Maroons' power play was ineffective against the Stars' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

In the losing effort, Chatham was led by Brennan Feasey, who finished with two goals. Feasey scored the first of his two goals at 19:47 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Chatham. Steven Szekesy assisted on the tally. Feasey's next tally made the score 3-2 Chatham with 3:16 left in the second period. Michael Verboom picked up the assist.

St. Thomas stifled the Maroons' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Stars' offense rang up 36 shots on Chatham's net.

St. Thomas was helped by Drew Collinson, who registered one goal. Collinson scored 12:00 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Scott Mitchell provided the assist. Ian MacDonald also scored for St. Thomas. In addition, St. Thomas received assists from Ryan Hamelin, Kevin Zacharuk, Mike Iacocca, Michael Lucifora, and Reid Oliver, who contributed one a piece.

The Maroons' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three St. Thomas power plays. Chatham kept the Stars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Devin Golets made 31 saves on 35 shots.

Chatham additionally got points from Verboom, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Chatham also got a goal from Brayden Hopkins as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Trevor Richardson, who had two and Nate Pietens, Connor Doran, and Evan Mascaro, who each chipped in one.

St. Thomas incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Darien Ekblad recorded 31 saves for the Maroons. Chatham incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
