Port Colborne squeaks by Niagara Falls, 3-2Gale Centre Fri, Jan 11, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The game between the Port Colborne Pirates and the Niagara Falls Canucks was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Port Colborne emerged with a 3-2 win. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Charlie Izaguirre secured the win for the Pirates with a goal in the second period. Izaguirre had two goals to lead Port Colborne to victory. The Pirates capitalized on Niagara Falls' penalties, netting two goals while skating with a man advantage. Port Colborne struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 34 penalty minutes for five opposing power plays. Trevor Smith also scored for Port Colborne. In addition, Port Colborne received assists from Bryan Komasara, who had three and Michael Sharp, Dayne Phillips, and Nick Berst, who contributed one a piece. The Canucks did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Niagara Falls averages 4.5 goals per game. The Canucks were helped by Vito Scaringi, who tallied one goal. Scaringi scored on the power play 2:25 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls had gotten the advantage when the Pirates' Smith was sent off for tripping. Cole Vinnai picked up the assist. Niagara Falls also got a goal from Marcus Michalski as well. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Brad Kri, Michael Christou, and Darren Young, who each chipped in one. Port Colborne's Real Cormier stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Hunter Johnson made 25 saves for the Canucks on 28 shots. Niagara Falls incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
